Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
